How it works

  1. Hear the sound, not the name

    Tapping M says /m/, not “em”. The sound is what lets a child blend letters into words — m-a-t only becomes mat if you know the sounds. You can switch to letter names, or both, whenever you like.

  2. Three right answers hatches the egg

    Practice asks five short questions a round. Getting one wrong costs nothing but another try — there is no buzzer and no way to lose. Earn a letter three times and its egg cracks open into a creature that stays in the album for good.

  3. Add your own photos

    Photograph the dog, a favorite cup, grandma. Type what it is, and Wordnest works out the letter and mixes your pictures into the album and into practice. Children learn letters faster from things they already recognize.

Built by somebody who read the phonics research

Most alphabet apps teach things a child later has to unlearn. These are deliberate:

  • c is only ever /k/ — cat, cake, car. Never the soft c in city.
  • g is only ever /g/ — goat, grapes, guitar. Never the g in giraffe.
  • a e i o u teach the short sound first — apple, egg, igloo, octopus, umbrella.
  • x lives at the end of a word — fox, box, six. So the app asks “which letter does fox end with?”
  • qu travel together, and are highlighted together.
  • Aa Every letter is set in Andika, SIL's typeface for literacy teaching — the single-story a and g children are actually taught to write.

Nothing leaves the device

No accounts. No ads. No analytics. No network calls at all — the app makes none, and the Android build asks for no permissions beyond the camera you choose to open.

Progress and photos are stored on the device and are erasable from one screen. Once it has loaded, it works with the plane in airplane mode, because everything — the fonts, the icons, the music — ships inside it.
